The primary difference between a curling iron and a curling rod (also known as a curling wand or a clipless curling iron) is that a rod does not have a clamp mechanism. Most rods come with a heat-resistant glove and users wrap their hair around the rod with their hand.

Rods tend to create looser waves so if you are looking to make very tight curls, a traditional curling iron is probably a better match for you. Some clients, however, find that the clamp on traditional curling irons leaves creases in the hair and so they prefer using rods. Both are really versatile hair styling tools; it really depends on your personal preference and the look you are hoping to achieve.
